2013 Portfolio 1st John Tlumacki/The Boston Globe Boston-4/18/13- A man was rescued by Boston Firefighter on an aerial ladder assisted by Boston EMS. Police responded to a report of a man carrying a backpack threatening to jump off the bridge at Washington Street in Chinatown that goes over the MassPike. Traffic was stopped on the Pike so the firetruck could raise it’s ladder from below. He was handcuffed to the fence and a hole was cut into the fence to bring him to the street. His backpack fell to the MassPike and was searched. Boston-06/29/13- A funeral service was held for Odin Lloyd at the Holy Spirit Church in Mattapan. His mother, Ursula Ward is helped after the service by his sister Olivia Thibou. Lloyd was allegedly shot to death by former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez. Quincy-09/28/13 Dog lovers held a vigil at Pageant Field to remember a pit bull named Puppy Doe who had been tortured and was put to sleep. They came out to show their anger at the cruelty that the dog had gone through, and called for justice. Boston-02/09/13- People began to dugout from the nearly two feet of snow from the blizzard. Two people ski along Congress Street past the Old State House where it appeared to be a ghost town with vehicle traffic banned. Boston-06/08/13- The annual Boston Pride annual parade winded 2.6 miles from Copley Square, through the South End to the Boston Common with over 15,000 marchers. Leah Spivey from Tewksbury sported some mighty long eyelashes. Allston-07/12/13 _Marquis Jones is its on a mattress in his apartment on Pratt Street in Allston, where his roommate was stabbed to death outside during a party. He is upset at the overcrowded condition in the home share by college students. Boston 12/24/2013- John Wuschke from South Boston has been homeless for three years. He waits for his lunch at the annual Christmas Eve lunch was served to close to 1000 homeless men and woman at the Pine Street Inn. Mansfield-10/25/13– Earl Austin is a Korean War vet and wrote a book about Mansfield servicemen who died in wartime. He stands at the town war memorial. Oli Elia works on a blown glass piece in his booth. Somerville-09/11/13 Joicee Gordillo, 11 is blind and with the help of Dorian Escalon was able to feel one of the horses in the stables at Cavalias Odysseo. Escalon is one of the riders in the show, and Gordillo visited the stables with a group of visually impaired students. Boston-4/15/13- Boston Police officers Rachel McGuire, Kevin McGill and Javier Pagan react to a second terrorist bomb exploding at the Boston Marathon. They ran after the first bomb exploded next to them near the finish line of the Boston Marathon that knocked down runner Bill Effrig on to Boylston Street. She was standing with her mother Celeste and father Kevin to cheer on her aunt was was running. A piece of shrapnel the size of a cell phone from the pressure-cooker bomb severed her femoral artery. She nearly bled to death. She fell fifteen feet away from her mother who lost both legs in the bombing. Boston-5/03/13- Boston Marathon bombing survivors Celeste Corcoran from Lowell and her daughter Sydney hug at Spaulding Rehab Hospital as Sydney was discharged. Celeste lost both her legs and Sydney almost died after a massive leg injury tore her femoral artery. Sydney’s departure both comforts and unsettles Celeste.”if Sydney would of died, I think I would of died with her.” Celeste said. Boston-5/03/13- Boston Marathon bombing survivor Sydney Corcoran looks back at her mother Celeste as she is about to leave in her brother Tyler’s car as they drive away from Spaulding Rehab Hospital. Sydney was discharged, but her mother would stay for several more days to do physical therapy. They were together since the bombing hospitalized the. Her mother lost both legs. Boston-5/03/13-Celeste Corcoran worked hard in physical therapy doing leg lifts at Spaulding Rehab Hospital. She had to wait for her legs to heal before getting fitted for prosthetics. She was determined at this point to return to “the new normal” as she called it. Lowell-5/28/13- Sydney Corcoran a victim of the marathon bombing gets ready for her Lowell High School senior prom as her mother Celeste wraps her foot that was injured in the bombing. A chuck of her foot was destroyed in the bombing that also ripped into her femoral artery. Celeste lost both her legs in the bombing. It was Sydney’s dream to go to her prom. Boston-06/20/13- Celeste Corcoran puts on her right prothesis as her daughter Sydney looks on in Celeste’s room at Spaulding Rehab Hospital. Celeste stayed for another week at the hospital after getting her first set of prosthetics. She was discouraged by the clunky feel they had. Boston-5/22/13- Celeste Corcoran cries after being overwhelmed after getting fitted for her prosthetics at Spaulding Hospital. Her doctor told her the next time he will see her, she will be walking. Boston-06/20/13- Celeste Corcoran walks on her two new prothesis at Spaulding Rehab. She lost both legs in the first Marathon bombing. She is helped by physical therapist Alyson Jodoin as her daughter Sydney(l) who was also severely injured walks with them. “They just feel so unnatural. It feels like you’re walking on stilts.” Celeste said. Lowell–08/3013 Kevin Corcoran breaks down into tears in the kitchen of his home as he embraces his son Tyler after having an emotional day at work. Kevin’s wife, Celeste lost both legs in the 1st Boston Marathon bombing, and his daughter Sydney was seriously injured. Kevin saved Celeste’s life by using his belt and another one to stop the bleeding in her legs after the bombing. He admits that he should go to ptsd counseling but says he gets the most support from his family. “I don’t have nightmares. I’m dealing with it.” he said. Lowell11/9/13- Celeste Corcoran sits on her daybed in her dining room, and rubs her sore legs after arriving home. She goes through a ritual of removing her new prosthetics and letting them dry out. She then gets around the house in her wheelchair. “I just want to me be. Every time I do something that nobody thought I could, I’m getting justice.” she said. Lowell–09/05/2013 Celeste Corcoran holds the arm of her daughter Sydney as they elk with her son Tyler off walks off the Lowell Stadium baseball field after she and Sydney threw out the first pitch in a benefit softball game. Celeste, despite having getting new state of the art prosthetics, still needs to be helped with her balance as she gets tired walking. Lowell-11/9/13- Kevin and Celeste Corcoran make their way to the Tsongas Arena to an event to honor victims and first responders of the Boston Marathon. Celeste was tired from being on her legs all day and was wheeled the long distance from the parking lot. It’s the first time he talked about the alleged murder committed by former Patriots player Hernandez.
