Jessica Rinaldi/The Boston Globe Boston, MA — 04/24/2024 – Ross Mendes, 6, played on the Grand Staircase inside the Massachusetts State House beside 70 sets of shoes placed to represent the 70 children who are abused or neglected every day in Massachusetts during “Step Up for Kids” an event held to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention Month. Mendes mother, Madison Scott, grew up in an abusive home and when she became a mom she knew she wanted to break that cycle so she reached out to Healthy Families and found a mentor who was able to help her navigate motherhood.

The polar plunge on New Year’s day dates back over 100 years in Boston, but many people, mainly members of the L-Street Brownies, take daily swims 365 days a year into the ocean. This year money from t-shirt sales was given to local charities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported the water temp in Boston Harbor to be at 44.6F and air was measured at 30F.
